What Tretinoin is, and how to get treatment
Tretinoin is vitamin-A acid, and it exists as two very different medicines. As a cream or gel it is applied to the skin for acne, where it clears blocked pores. As a capsule taken by mouth it is a hospital cancer treatment for acute promyelocytic leukaemia, given under haematology supervision — the same molecule, a completely different setting and dose. Both are real, authorised medicines; neither is something Hi-Doctor prescribes, because we treat hair loss, weight management and sexual health.

This trial covers the oral, hospital-supervised oncology use of tretinoin only. It tells you nothing about the topical tretinoin cream or gel used for acne, which is a different product used at a completely different dose.

What has been reported with Tretinoin.
Two different medicines, one molecule
Topical tretinoin (cream or gel) is authorised for acne vulgaris. Oral tretinoin is a hospital cancer medicine for acute promyelocytic leukaemia. They are not interchangeable.
Differentiation syndrome (oral use)
Oral tretinoin in leukaemia can cause a potentially life-threatening reaction with fever, breathlessness and fluid retention, which is why it is given under specialist haematology monitoring.
Birth defects
Tretinoin was covered by the EMA's 2018 retinoid review; oral retinoids can harm the unborn child and must not be used in pregnancy. Topical retinoids are also not recommended in pregnancy.
Skin irritation (topical use)
Redness, peeling, dryness, burning and increased sensitivity to sunlight are the common effects of the cream or gel.
Tretinoin is a molecule frequently searched online; it does not currently fall within Hi-Doctor's clinical scope.
