What causes hair loss?

Hair loss becomes more common with age but can start early. The most common cause is male or female pattern hair loss, driven by genetics and the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

How can I treat hair loss?

There are tablets, scalp treatments and combinations. Your doctor reviews your answers and photos, explains each option and prescribes one only if it suits you.

What to know before your consultation

Who the hair consultation suits

The hair consultation is for adults with gradual thinning at the hairline, crown or top of the scalp. Sudden, patchy or scarring hair loss, or hair loss with a painful or inflamed scalp, needs an in-person examination, and in that case the doctor tells you and your fee is refunded. Treatment is not offered online to women who are pregnant, breastfeeding or planning a pregnancy. The service does not replace emergency care: for urgent symptoms, call 112.

How the hair consultation works

You answer an online questionnaire about the pattern of your hair loss, how long it has been happening, your family history and your health. An EU-licensed doctor reviews your answers, may ask follow-up questions in the private chat in your account, and decides whether treatment is appropriate. If it is, you receive an e-prescription to use at a pharmacy of your choice, where you pay for the treatment separately. If it is not, the doctor explains why and your fee is refunded.

Hair follow-up with your doctor

Hair treatment works slowly, so your doctor helps you judge progress over months rather than weeks. Regular check-ins cover how your hair is responding and how you feel, and nothing changes automatically at renewal. Results usually last only while treatment continues, so any decision to stop is made with your doctor. You can message your doctor in the private chat at any time and cancel your plan from your account.

Which treatments can a doctor prescribe?
Daily tablets, low-dose oral treatment, scalp sprays or foams, or a personalised compounded formula, chosen for your pattern of hair loss and your history.
Hair treatments act slowly, so on the plan your doctor reviews your progress every 90 days and explains what to expect in your case. Consistency matters.

Some options are suitable for women and some are not. The questionnaire asks about your history, and a doctor decides what is appropriate.
Adults with gradual, pattern hair loss: a receding hairline, a thinning crown or diffuse thinning. Sudden or patchy hair loss, or loss with scalp redness, scaling or pain, can have other causes and needs an in-person examination. In that case the doctor tells you before any treatment is approved, and you are not charged.
You answer a 5-minute questionnaire about your hair loss, your health and any medicines you take. An EU-licensed doctor reads it, may ask follow-up questions in the private chat in your account, and replies in under 2 hours on average. If treatment is appropriate, you get an e-prescription that you take to the pharmacy you choose, where you collect and pay for the medicine; each pharmacy decides whether it can dispense it.
Some tablets can cause sexual side effects such as lower libido in a small number of people, usually reversible on stopping. Mood changes have also been reported, so tell your doctor straight away about any low mood. Scalp treatments can cause temporary extra shedding at the start and scalp irritation, and oral treatment can cause unwanted hair growth or dizziness. Your doctor explains what to watch for.
Yes. Pattern hair loss is not harmful to your health, and choosing not to treat it is a valid option. Some people prefer a shorter haircut, hair fibres or a hair system. If the cause is unclear, or you are thinking about a hair transplant, an in-person dermatologist is the right next step, and your doctor tells you when that makes sense.
On the plan, your doctor reviews your progress every 90 days and decides with you whether to continue or adjust treatment. Changes are never automatic. You can cancel anytime from your account, and the plan stops at the end of the current billing period. If you stop treatment, the hair you kept or regrew is usually lost again over the following months, so talk to your doctor first.

If the doctor does not approve your consultation or review, the refund is issued within 48 hours and you do not need to ask for it. It goes back to your original payment method; how soon it shows on your statement depends on your bank.
It covers the Hi Doctor fee for the consultation or review that was not approved. The medicine is never paid to Hi Doctor: you pay your pharmacy for it, so it is not part of a refund from us. Once the medical review has started, the legal right of withdrawal no longer applies, so any other request is reviewed individually.
Refunds for consultations the doctor does not approve are automatic. For anything else, write to hello@hi-doctor.ai and tell us what happened. We review every request individually and pay approved refunds to the original payment method.
