Clindamycin + benzoyl peroxide is a fixed-dose gel authorised in the EU for mild to moderate acne, particularly inflammatory lesions, in adults and adolescents from 12 years. NICE lists it as a first-line 12-week option for mild to moderate acne.
Topical antibiotics are never prescribed alone because resistance develops quickly; benzoyl peroxide prevents that. Continuous use is limited to 12 weeks, after which a licensed doctor moves you to an antibiotic-free maintenance treatment.
How it works in the body
Clindamycin inhibits protein synthesis in acne-associated bacteria and reduces inflammation around the follicle. Benzoyl peroxide oxidises the bacteria directly and mildly loosens the pore. In two randomised trials the combination reduced inflammatory lesions more than either component or vehicle.
