HIV PrEP

PrEP reduces the risk of acquiring HIV when taken on the agreed schedule. HIV infection must be excluded and kidney function checked before starting; follow-up includes regular testing and wider sexual-health care.

WHAT IT IS

PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is an antiretroviral medication taken by an HIV-negative person to reduce the risk of acquiring HIV through sex. It is not a vaccine, does not cure HIV, and does not protect against other sexually transmitted infections.

There are two dosing schedules: daily dosing (one tablet per day) and event-driven or on-demand dosing (2-1-1), which involves taking two tablets between 2 and 24 hours before sex, one at 24 hours and another at 48 hours. The event-driven schedule is only indicated for men who have sex with men.

Before starting PrEP, a negative HIV test and kidney function assessment are essential. Regular follow-up with HIV testing, kidney function monitoring and STI screening is a core part of the programme.
