Rybelsus is a prescription tablet containing semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. In the European Union it is authorised to improve glucose control in adults with insufficiently controlled type 2 diabetes, alongside diet and physical activity. It is not authorised as a general weight-loss tablet.
How GLP-1 receptor action affects glucose
Semaglutide supports insulin release when glucose is elevated, reduces inappropriate glucagon release and slows stomach emptying. Together these effects can improve blood-glucose control. Appetite may decrease, but the treatment goal, expected benefit and monitoring should be defined from the authorised diabetes indication and the individual clinical plan.
Why the tablet has strict timing
Peptide medicines are normally broken down in the digestive tract. Rybelsus uses an absorption-enhancing formulation, but only a small and variable amount is absorbed. Taking it after fasting with a limited amount of water and waiting before food, drink or other tablets helps make exposure more predictable.
What it can and cannot do
Rybelsus can improve HbA1c and other metabolic outcomes for suitable adults. It does not cure type 2 diabetes, replace nutrition and activity, or guarantee weight loss. Response is assessed over time, and another diabetes medicine may remain necessary.
When to seek help
Seek prompt care for severe persistent abdominal pain, repeated vomiting with dehydration, sudden or rapidly worsening vision, a severe allergic reaction or symptoms of very low blood sugar. Pregnancy, plans to conceive, breastfeeding, diabetic eye disease, kidney problems, previous pancreatitis and medicines that lower glucose all need specific review.
What to prepare for a medical review
A clinician will confirm the diagnosis and treatment goal, current HbA1c or glucose pattern, other diabetes medicines, kidney and eye history, gastrointestinal symptoms, and whether the fasting administration routine is realistic. Never change strength, split tablets or combine semaglutide products on your own.
A calm next step
Discuss whether oral semaglutide fits your diabetes plan, other medicines and daily routine. Use the current pack leaflet because tablet strengths and switching instructions can change as formulations are updated.
