What Rybelsus is, and what to know

Rybelsus is a tablet form of semaglutide. It is licensed in the European Union, but only for one thing: controlling blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not licensed in the EU as a weight-loss medicine. People taking it for diabetes often lose some weight as a side effect, and that is where its reputation as a weight-loss pill comes from, but prescribing Rybelsus purely to lose weight is off-label, meaning it is being used outside what regulators have assessed and approved. A separate, higher-dose oral semaglutide tablet was authorised in the EU for weight management in July 2026, so if you are looking for a semaglutide tablet for weight, that is a different product and a doctor should decide what is appropriate for you.

Rybelsus has been authorised for use in the EU since 3 April 2020, so an EU-licensed doctor can prescribe it when it is clinically appropriate for you.
