How to use
- 01
Step 1
Take on an empty stomach
Take Rybelsus first thing in the morning, at least 8 hours after your last meal. Swallow the tablet whole with a sip of water (no more than 120 ml). Do not split, crush, or chew the tablet.
- 02
Step 2
Wait 30 minutes before eating
After taking the tablet, wait at least 30 minutes before eating or drinking anything (including other medications). This is important for the medication to be absorbed properly.
- 03
Step 3
Take it at the same time each day
Consistency helps maintain steady levels. If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next one at the usual time. Do not take two doses at once.

How it compares
| Prescription weight-loss medicines at a glance | How it works | Dosing | Route | Dose steps |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mounjaro (tirzepatide) | Dual GIP + GLP-1 receptor agonist | Once weekly | Injection under the skin | 2.5 to 15 mg over 5+ months |
| Wegovy (semaglutide) | GLP-1 receptor agonist | Once weekly | Injection under the skin | 0.25 to 2.4 mg over 4+ months |
| Saxenda (liraglutide) | GLP-1 receptor agonist | Once daily | Injection under the skin | 0.6 to 3.0 mg over 4+ weeks |
| Rybelsus (semaglutide) | GLP-1 receptor agonist | Once daily, empty stomach | Tablet by mouth | 1.5 to 9 mg over 2+ months |
All four require the same lifestyle foundation: reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. Your prescriber chooses based on your history, preferences and response. Rybelsus is licensed for type 2 diabetes and may be prescribed off-label for weight management where your doctor judges it appropriate.

Side effects
Nausea
Very common in the first weeks. Eat smaller meals, avoid fatty or fried foods, and eat slowly. Nausea usually improves within 1-2 weeks.
Constipation or diarrhoea
Drink plenty of water (6-8 glasses a day). Include fibre-rich foods like vegetables and whole grains. Gentle movement like walking can help.
Fatigue
Some patients feel tired in the first weeks. This usually passes. Rest when needed and keep your meals light.
