More about your care

What is it?

Insulin resistance is a condition in which the body's cells respond less effectively to insulin, forcing the pancreas to produce more of it to keep blood glucose levels under control.

Over time, this extra effort can exhaust the pancreas and raise blood glucose, marking the path toward prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Detecting insulin resistance early allows intervention before it progresses.

This condition is closely linked to excess weight, especially abdominal fat, and to genetic factors. Weight loss and exercise are the most effective interventions to improve it.

Insulin resistance usually improves with targeted weight loss and habit changes. The doctor assesses whether a treatment speeds up the process.

HOW COMMON IT IS

A widespread metabolic alteration that often goes unnoticed because it produces no obvious symptoms until blood glucose begins to rise.

CAUSES

  • Excess abdominal and visceral fat
  • Sedentary lifestyle and low physical activity
  • Diet high in refined sugars and fast-absorbing carbohydrates
  • Genetic factors and family history of type 2 diabetes
  • Sleep disturbances and circadian rhythm disruption
  • Low-grade chronic inflammation

TREATMENT APPROACHES

  • Moderate weight loss under medical supervision
  • Combined aerobic and resistance exercise to improve insulin sensitivity
  • Dietary plan low in refined carbohydrates and high in fibre
  • Prescription treatment, when the doctor considers it appropriate
  • Monitoring of glucose and metabolic markers
  • Stress management and improved sleep quality

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

See a doctor if you are overweight or have obesity with a family history of type 2 diabetes, or if previous blood tests have shown slightly elevated glucose.

Insulin resistance sits within the weight management area that Hi Doctor covers. Our doctors review your case individually, not through an algorithm, and propose a therapeutic approach when indicated.
You fill in a weight management-oriented medical questionnaire (~5 min). An EU-licensed doctor reviews your clinical history, current medication, allergies and background in less than 2 hours on average. If clarifications are needed, they message you via the private chat in your account.
The doctor proposes the most appropriate treatment among those authorised in the EU for weight management. The weight-loss plan is €25/month. Other areas: €15/month (billed €45 every 90 days) for hair growth, €35 per sexual health consultation and €40 per skin consultation. If your case is not eligible, the applicable fee is refunded in full.
It depends on the case. For weight management, reasonable timelines are explained during the consultation and follow-up lives inside the private chat. The full medical record stays in an auditable thread inside your account.
Yes. Hi Doctor runs 100% online across the EU, so from Santander you can fill in the questionnaire and receive the medical review without travelling. The EU-licensed doctor issues the electronic prescription under Directive 2011/24/EU, and each pharmacy decides whether it can dispense it; in Spain it is dispensed directly from the prescription QR.
Adults with BMI ≥ 30, or ≥ 27 with comorbidities (hypertension, type-2 diabetes, dyslipidaemia). The doctor reviews your history, current medication and goals before proposing any treatment. It is not a cosmetic programme.
The private electronic prescription (Receta Médica Privada Electrónica) is issued by an EU-licensed doctor. It is a PDF carrying every field required by EU Directive 2011/24/EU (patient, prescriber with country of registration, active ingredient, dose). Each pharmacy decides whether it can dispense it. In Spanish pharmacies it is dispensed from the QR; outside Spain, some pharmacies do not accept PDF prescriptions, and those that do dispense the locally marketed equivalent of the same active ingredient.
1) Fill in an online medical questionnaire in about 4 minutes. 2) The weight-loss plan is €25/month. Other areas: €15/month (billed €45 every 90 days) for hair growth, €35 per sexual health consultation and €40 per skin consultation. 3) An EU-licensed doctor reviews your case and, if appropriate, issues an electronic prescription. 4) Collect it at the pharmacy you choose; each pharmacy decides whether it can dispense it.
