Androgenetic alopecia

How we assess androgenetic alopecia, when a medical treatment makes sense and what alternatives to consider.

WHAT IT IS

Androgenetic alopecia, also known as common baldness, is a progressive form of hair loss determined by genetic factors. It is caused by the action of androgens on genetically predisposed hair follicles, shortening the growth phase of hair and reducing the thickness of each strand.

In men it typically presents as a receding frontal hairline and thinning at the crown, while in women it appears as diffuse thinning on the top of the scalp. It is a progressive condition, but the doctor assesses the available options to slow its progression.

HOW COMMON IT IS

The most common form of hair loss: its frequency increases with age in men, and it also affects many women after menopause.

CAUSES

  • Genetic predisposition (polygenic inheritance)
  • Action of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) on hair follicles
  • Advancing age
  • Hormonal factors, particularly during menopause

TREATMENT APPROACHES

  • Topical or oral minoxidil to stimulate growth
  • Finasteride or dutasteride to reduce DHT conversion
  • Combination therapies based on patient profile
  • Regular medical follow-up to assess response

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

If you notice progressive thinning or a receding hairline, the doctor assesses your case and the most appropriate treatment options.
