TREATMENT GUIDE

Female hair loss treatment guide

Everything you need to know about female pattern hair loss treatment — how to use your medication, what to expect, managing side effects, and when to contact your doctor.

How to use

Step 1

Topical minoxidil 5%

Apply 1 ml once or twice daily to the scalp in the thinning area. Part your hair and apply directly to the scalp. Wash your hands after application.

Step 2

Oral medications

If your doctor has prescribed finasteride, spironolactone, or dutasteride, take them at the same time each day with food. Spironolactone may increase urination — taking it in the morning helps.

Step 3

Consistency matters

Hair growth treatments require daily consistency. Set reminders and do not skip doses. Results take 6-12 months.

Dose schedule

1

First 3-6 months

Initial shedding may occur. This is normal and indicates the treatment is working. Continue consistently.

2

6-12 months

Hair stabilisation and visible regrowth. Your doctor will assess progress at 6-month intervals.

3

Ongoing

Long-term treatment needed to maintain results. Stopping will cause hair loss to return.

Side effects

Spironolactone side effects

May cause increased urination, dizziness, headache, or breast tenderness. Your doctor may monitor your potassium levels. Stay hydrated.

Minoxidil side effects

Scalp irritation, dryness, or itching is possible. Using the foam formulation can reduce irritation.

When to contact your doctor

  • Persistent side effects that concern you
  • Dizziness, irregular heartbeat, or unusual fatigue
  • No improvement after 12 months of consistent treatment

Storage

Store at room temperature below 25°C. Keep in the original packaging to protect from light and moisture. Do not use after the expiry date on the carton.

What to expect

Female pattern hair loss treatment aims to stabilise hair loss and promote regrowth. The approach depends on the extent of scalp involvement — from topical minoxidil alone for mild cases, to combined oral therapy for more advanced hair loss. Results require patience: 6-12 months of consistent use before evaluating effectiveness. Your doctor will review your progress every 6 months and adjust treatment as needed.
