What Modafinil is, and how to get treatment
Modafinil is a prescription medicine that helps people stay awake, and it is authorised in EU countries for one purpose only: the excessive daytime sleepiness of narcolepsy, a neurological sleep disorder. In 2011 the European Commission removed its other sleep indications after a safety review, so taking it for shift work, ordinary tiredness, focus or "cognitive enhancement" is off-label — outside anything an EU regulator has approved. It is a genuine medicine; it is simply prescribed by sleep and neurology specialists, not by us. Hi-Doctor treats hair loss, weight management and sexual health, and does not treat sleep disorders.

Everyone in this trial had diagnosed narcolepsy; the result says nothing about ordinary tiredness, shift work, or use for concentration in healthy people.

What has been reported with Modafinil.
Indication restricted by EU regulators
After an Article 31 safety review, the CHMP opinion of 18 November 2010 and the European Commission decision of 27 January 2011 restricted modafinil in the EU to narcolepsy only, withdrawing the obstructive sleep apnoea, shift-work sleep disorder and idiopathic hypersomnia indications.
Serious skin reactions
The EU review confirmed a link to rare but life-threatening skin reactions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis, with higher risk in children; modafinil is not recommended in children.
Psychiatric reactions
The EU review found a link with psychiatric adverse reactions including suicidal thoughts, depression and psychotic episodes.
Cardiovascular effects
Associated with raised blood pressure and irregular heartbeat; the EU review advised against use in people with uncontrolled hypertension or arrhythmia.
Modafinil is a molecule frequently searched online; it does not currently fall within Hi-Doctor's clinical scope.
