It is done in a clinic, usually under local anaesthetic and over several hours, and a surgeon moves individual hair follicles from the back or sides of your head into the thinning areas. Because it is an operation, no doctor can prescribe it and it cannot be arranged through an online consultation - you would need an in-person assessment with a surgeon. It also does not stop the underlying pattern hair loss, so hair in the untreated areas can keep thinning and doctors often advise continuing medical treatment alongside it. Bleeding

Bleeding requiring intervention was reported in up to 8% of patients in the 2025 review.

Hair loss carries on afterwards

Surgery moves existing follicles but does not stop the underlying process; a 2026 review notes that alopecia may continue to evolve and that further procedures or ongoing medical treatment may be needed.
