WHAT IT IS
Type 2 diabetes is a chronic metabolic condition in which the body does not use insulin properly (insulin resistance) and, over time, the pancreas does not produce enough insulin to keep glucose in a healthy range.
Unlike type 1 diabetes, it usually develops in adulthood and is strongly linked to excess weight, physical inactivity and genetic predisposition. Many people can keep glucose under control with healthy habits, but others need medication.
Comprehensive management combines diabetes education, lifestyle changes and, when indicated by a doctor, medications that help control blood glucose and reduce the risk of complications.
HOW COMMON IT IS
An estimated 30+ million people in the EU live with diabetes, of whom approximately 90 % have type 2 diabetes.
International Diabetes Federation (IDF) — Europe Region
CAUSES
- Insulin resistance — cells do not respond adequately to insulin
- Progressive decline in pancreatic beta-cell function
- Excess body weight, especially visceral fat
- Sedentary lifestyle and a diet high in calories and low in nutritional value
- Genetic predisposition — family history of type 2 diabetes
- Advancing age and certain ethnic backgrounds with higher risk
TREATMENT APPROACHES
- Lifestyle changes — balanced diet, regular physical activity and weight loss if needed
- Diabetes education for self-monitoring of glucose
- Metformin as first-line medication, if prescribed by the doctor
- Other oral or injectable antidiabetic agents (GLP-1, SGLT2i) depending on the patient profile
- Insulin when glucose levels are not controlled with other treatments
- Regular monitoring of blood glucose, HbA1c, blood pressure and lipid profile
