Psoriasis

Psoriasis usually needs ongoing dermatology follow-up. Hi-Doctor doesn't cover it yet. Join the list and we'll let you know.

SKIN ON HI-DOCTOR

Skin is one of the areas our doctors do cover.

Acne, rosacea, melasma and ageing skin are reviewed online by an EU-licensed doctor for €40, and anything prescribed is applied to the skin. Psoriasis is not part of that consultation today — for it you still need a dermatologist you see in person.

WHAT IT IS

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory skin condition of autoimmune origin characterised by red, scaly plaques, especially on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back. It is not contagious.

It is caused by an accelerated skin-cell renewal cycle driven by an abnormal immune response, leading to cell accumulation on the skin surface.

The course of the disease varies between individuals, with flare-ups and periods of remission. A dermatologist assesses the extent and type of psoriasis to propose the most suitable treatment.

HOW COMMON IT IS

Psoriasis affects approximately 2–3 % of the world population, with similar prevalence in men and women.

International Federation of Psoriasis Associations (IFPA)

CAUSES

  • Genetic predisposition — multiple genes linked to immune response
  • Abnormal activation of T-cells that accelerates cell renewal
  • Trigger factors such as infections, stress, skin injuries or certain medications
  • Cold, dry weather that can worsen flare-ups
  • Association with other conditions such as psoriatic arthritis

TREATMENT APPROACHES

  • Topical corticosteroids as first-line treatment for mild to moderate plaques
  • Topical vitamin D analogues, alone or combined with corticosteroids
  • Phototherapy with narrow-band UVB under dermatological supervision
  • Systemic treatment with methotrexate, ciclosporin or acitretin for moderate to severe cases
  • Targeted biologic therapies for moderate to severe cases that do not respond to other treatments
  • General measures: skin moisturising, avoiding scratching and stress management

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

See a doctor if plaques appear that do not improve with moisturising creams, if lesions spread or are painful, or if you have joint pain and swelling (possible psoriatic arthritis).
