WHAT IT IS
Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterised by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or waking too early without being able to return to sleep, with negative consequences during the day.
When it occurs at least three nights per week for over three months, it is considered chronic insomnia. It can be primary or secondary to other conditions such as anxiety, depression, chronic pain or certain medications.
A medical approach begins with a detailed clinical history that rules out organic or psychiatric causes and assesses sleep habits, schedules and environmental factors.
HOW COMMON IT IS
Chronic insomnia is estimated to affect around 6 % of the adult population in Europe; insomnia symptoms are far more common, affecting up to a third of adults at some point.
European Sleep Research Society (ESRS)
CAUSES
- Stress, worries or stressful life events
- Mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression
- Poor sleep habits (irregular schedules, screen use before bed, caffeine or alcohol)
- Medical conditions such as chronic pain, sleep apnoea or hyperthyroidism
- Certain medications that interfere with sleep
- Environmental factors such as noise, light or unsuitable bedroom temperature
TREATMENT APPROACHES
- Cognitive-behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) as first-line treatment
- Sleep hygiene — regular schedules, suitable environment and relaxing routine
- Sleep restriction and stimulus control
- Relaxation techniques, meditation and stress reduction
- Regular physical exercise, avoiding intense activity close to bedtime
- Hypnotic medication only for short-term use under medical prescription, when indicated
WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR
