Eczema

Eczema needs an individual dermatology review. We're bringing dermatology onto Hi-Doctor; in the meantime we'll keep you posted by email.

SKIN ON HI-DOCTOR

Skin is one of the areas our doctors do cover.

Acne, rosacea, melasma and ageing skin are reviewed online by an EU-licensed doctor for €40, and anything prescribed is applied to the skin. Eczema is not part of that consultation today — for it you still need a dermatologist you see in person.

WHAT IT IS

Eczema (atopic dermatitis) is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that presents with flare-ups of intense itching, redness, dryness and sometimes small blisters or cracks. It is common in children but can persist or appear in adults.

The skin barrier in people with eczema does not function normally, leading to moisture loss and easier entry of irritants or allergens.

Treatment is determined by a doctor based on severity, location and the patient's age, combining skin-barrier care with topical or systemic medication when needed.

HOW COMMON IT IS

Atopic dermatitis affects approximately 15–20 % of children and 2–8 % of adults in Europe, with significant geographic variation.

European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology (EADV)

CAUSES

  • Genetic predisposition affecting skin-barrier function
  • Immune-system dysfunction with exaggerated inflammatory response
  • Altered skin microbiota
  • Environmental factors such as allergens, irritants or climate changes
  • Emotional stress as a trigger for flare-ups

TREATMENT APPROACHES

  • Intensive moisturising with specific emollients to restore the skin barrier
  • Topical corticosteroids of varying potency depending on flare severity and location
  • Topical calcineurin inhibitors as an alternative in sensitive areas
  • Identification and avoidance of identified triggers
  • General measures such as short lukewarm baths and gentle cleansers
  • Systemic treatment (immunomodulators or biologics) for moderate to severe cases under medical supervision

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

See a doctor if flare-ups are frequent, intense or interfere with sleep and daily life. Also if signs of infection appear — yellowish crusts, increased pain or fever.
