WHAT IT IS
Chronic pain is pain that persists beyond three months, or beyond the expected healing time of an injury. Unlike acute pain, which serves as a warning signal, chronic pain can itself become a disease.
It may originate from an initial injury (such as surgery or trauma) or from an ongoing medical condition (such as osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia or neuropathy), but in many cases the exact cause is not fully identified.
The management of chronic pain usually requires a multidisciplinary approach combining pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments, tailored to each person and periodically reviewed by a medical team.
HOW COMMON IT IS
Chronic pain is estimated to affect approximately 20 % of the European adult population, with higher prevalence in women and people over 65.

CAUSES
- Previous injuries or surgeries with incomplete healing
- Osteoarthritis and other degenerative joint conditions
- Nerve damage or dysfunction (neuropathic pain)
- Chronic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis
- Fibromyalgia and other central sensitivity syndromes
- Psychological and social factors that modulate pain perception
TREATMENT APPROACHES
- Physiotherapy and supervised therapeutic exercise
- Cognitive-behavioural therapy for pain management and kinesiophobia
- Non-opioid analgesics (paracetamol, NSAIDs) as determined by the doctor
- Adjuvant medications such as antidepressants or anticonvulsants for neuropathic pain
- Opioids only in selected cases, at the minimum effective dose and under close supervision
- Interventional techniques (nerve blocks, radiofrequency) in specialist pain units
WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR
See a doctor if pain persists for more than three months, interferes with your daily activity or mood, or does not improve with the measures you have tried. A medical evaluation is the first step toward a suitable treatment plan.
