WHAT IT IS

Anxiety is a natural response to stress or danger, but when it is persistent, disproportionate or occurs without a clear trigger, it may be considered an anxiety disorder.

Anxiety disorders include generalised anxiety disorder, panic attacks, social anxiety and specific phobias. Common symptoms include excessive worry, muscle tension, difficulty concentrating, irritability and sleep disturbances.

A medical approach starts with an evaluation that rules out organic causes and assesses the intensity and functional impact, to recommend the most suitable treatment for each person.

HOW COMMON IT IS

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental health conditions in Europe, with an estimated prevalence of 14 % of the population, and are more common in women than in men.

European College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ECNP)

CAUSES

  • Genetic predisposition and family history of anxiety
  • Neurotransmitter imbalance involving serotonin and noradrenaline
  • Stressful or traumatic life experiences
  • Personality traits such as perfectionism or low tolerance for uncertainty
  • Use of stimulant substances or certain medications
  • Underlying medical conditions such as hyperthyroidism or cardiovascular disease

TREATMENT APPROACHES

  • Psychological therapy, especially cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT)
  • Relaxation techniques, mindfulness and diaphragmatic breathing
  • Regular physical exercise as a supportive measure
  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) when prescribed by a doctor
  • Benzodiazepines only for occasional, short-term use under strict medical supervision
  • Psychoeducation about the disorder and normalisation of the experience

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

See a doctor if anxiety interferes with your work, relationships or quality of life, you have recurrent panic attacks, or you feel you cannot control the worry. A professional can help find the most suitable approach.
