WHAT IT IS

Allergies are immune-system reactions to normally harmless substances (allergens) such as pollen, dust mites, animal dander or certain foods.

When an allergic person encounters an allergen, their body releases histamine and other substances that cause symptoms like sneezing, nasal itching, watery eyes, skin rashes or, in more severe cases, breathing difficulty.

A medical assessment helps identify triggers, distinguish an allergy from other conditions with similar symptoms and recommend the most suitable approach for each case.

HOW COMMON IT IS

Respiratory allergies affect approximately 20–25 % of the European population, with variations by country and allergen type.

European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI)

CAUSES

  • Genetic predisposition (family history of allergy or asthma)
  • Exposure to environmental allergens (pollen, dust mites, mould, animal dander)
  • Foods or medications that trigger an allergic response
  • Environmental factors such as pollution or changes in early allergen exposure
  • Insect stings (hymenoptera)

TREATMENT APPROACHES

  • Identification and avoidance of the triggering allergen when possible
  • Oral or topical antihistamines for mild to moderate symptom control
  • Topical nasal corticosteroids for persistent allergic rhinitis
  • Allergen-specific immunotherapy (allergy shots) in selected cases
  • Saline nasal rinses as a supportive measure
  • Action plan for severe reactions with auto-injectable adrenaline if prescribed by a doctor

WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR

See a doctor if symptoms interfere with your quality of life, do not respond to general measures, or if you have had a severe reaction. Breathing difficulty, tongue or throat swelling and collapse are emergencies that require immediate care.
