“Female alopecia” describes an outcome, not one cause. Hair can become progressively finer, shift into a temporary shedding phase, break from traction or be lost through inflammation. The most useful first distinction is gradual pattern thinning versus sudden diffuse shedding.

Follicle miniaturisation

In female pattern hair loss, genetically susceptible follicles gradually produce finer, shorter hairs. The part widens and density reduces over the crown. Hormones may influence the process, but a standard hormone test is not required for every woman. Irregular periods, acne, increased facial hair or fertility concerns make endocrine review more relevant.

Telogen effluvium

Illness with fever, childbirth, surgery, severe stress, rapid weight loss, nutritional deficiency or a medicine change can push more hairs into the resting phase. Shedding often becomes visible weeks to months after the trigger. It can recover, though it may reveal underlying pattern thinning that was previously subtle.

Other diagnoses

Thyroid disease, iron deficiency and some systemic illnesses may contribute when the history fits. Alopecia areata, traction and scarring alopecias need different care. Buying a supplement without evidence of deficiency can delay diagnosis, and excess of some nutrients can itself worsen hair loss.

When to seek help

Arrange a medical review for sudden shedding, smooth bald patches, scalp pain or scarring, eyebrow loss, signs of infection, or hair loss with fatigue, weight change, heavy periods or new androgen symptoms. Pregnancy, breastfeeding and plans to conceive change which treatments are appropriate. Chest pain, fainting, a racing heartbeat or marked swelling while using a treatment need prompt care.

What to prepare for a medical review

Useful details include the pattern and speed of thinning, recent illness, childbirth, surgery, dieting or stress, menstrual changes, family history, scalp symptoms, hair practices, medicines and supplements. Photos taken in the same lighting and along the same part can help track change more honestly than daily mirror checks.

A calm next step

Bring a timeline that starts three months before shedding became obvious. A clinician can then decide whether the pattern is suitable for remote treatment or needs scalp examination and targeted tests.
