You live in Melilla and you need Hydroquinone — a prescription-only depigmenting cream for melasma. You want to know if you can get it online, how fast, and from a real doctor. Yes, you can. Hi-Doctor connects you with an EU-licensed dermatology doctor who reviews your case remotely. The consultation costs 40 €. If the doctor decides treatment is appropriate, you receive a REMPE electronic prescription in under 24 hours. You then take the prescription to any pharmacy in Melilla or across the EU to collect the medication. No risk: if the doctor determines the treatment is not suitable, you get your money back.

How it works — get your consultation in 4 steps

  1. Start the online consultation — Complete a secure medical questionnaire tailored to melasma and Hydroquinone. The questionnaire asks about your skin type, previous treatments, sun exposure, and includes a photo upload step. This photo is the single biggest trust differentiator: the doctor sees your skin, not just your words.
  2. Doctor reviews your case — An EU-licensed doctor reviews your answers and photos within 24 hours. They assess whether Hydroquinone 4% cream or gel, or a compounded melasma formula, is appropriate for you. The doctor decides based on your clinical picture — no video call, no waiting room.
  3. Prescription issued if appropriate — If the doctor approves, they issue a REMPE (Receta Médica Privada Electrónica) prescription. This is Spain's official digital private prescription standard, designed for EU-wide recognition under Directive 2011/24/EU. The PDF is delivered to your Hi-Doctor account and emailed to you.
  4. Collect at any pharmacy — Print the PDF or show it on your phone at any pharmacy in Melilla or the EU. The pharmacist reviews the prescription and may dispense a locally marketed equivalent with the same active ingredient. Pharmacists retain the right to refuse — but in practice, REMPE prescriptions are widely accepted.

Who qualifies

You are eligible if you have mild to moderate melasma (patches of dark skin on the face, typically triggered by sun exposure, hormones, or certain medications). The doctor will consider treatment if you are not pregnant or breastfeeding, have no history of allergic reactions to Hydroquinone or its components, and are willing to commit to daily broad-spectrum SPF 50+ protection. The questionnaire screens for these criteria. If you have severe, nodular, cystic, or scarring skin disease, or if oral isotretinoin or oral antibiotics are needed, the doctor will refer you to in-person care — Hi-Doctor does not prescribe oral dermatology medication.

What Hydroquinone actually does

Hydroquinone is a tyrosinase inhibitor. It blocks the enzyme that produces melanin, the pigment responsible for dark spots. Applied at night, in defined courses (typically 8–12 weeks), it lightens melasma patches. Hi-Doctor's doctors may prescribe:

  • Hydroquinone 4% cream (HQUIN) — Standard depigmenting cream.
  • Hydroquinone 4% gel (Licoforte) — Gel formulation for oily or acne-prone skin.
  • Compounded melasma formula — Hydroquinone 4% + tretinoin 0.025% + kojic acid 2% + niacinamide 4%. This is a modified Kligman-style triple approach that combines depigmenting, exfoliating, and brightening agents.

Critical: Broad-spectrum SPF 50+ every single day is not optional — it is part of the treatment. Melasma is driven by UV and visible light. Without daily photoprotection, any depigmenting agent will fail. Tinted sunscreens with iron oxides block visible light that mineral-only filters miss. Set realistic expectations: melasma often relapses after treatment stops. The goal is improvement, not permanent clearance.

Side effects and when to stop

Common side effects include mild redness, peeling, or stinging at the application site. These usually resolve as your skin adjusts. Stop use and contact the doctor if you develop severe irritation, blistering, or darkening of the skin (ochronosis). Hydroquinone should not be used for longer than 3–4 months continuously without a break. The doctor will advise on treatment duration and follow-up.
