Minoxidil treatment guide
Everything you need to know about minoxidil for hair growth — how to use it, what to expect, managing side effects, and when to contact your doctor.

Stap 1
Topical application
Apply 1 ml of the 5% solution or foam to the scalp twice daily. Part your hair in the area of thinning and apply directly to the scalp, not the hair. Wash your hands after each application. The foam formulation is preferred if you have sensitive skin.
Stap 2
Consistency is essential
Apply twice daily, every day, at roughly 12-hour intervals. Missing applications for several days can reduce effectiveness.
Stap 3
Oral minoxidil
If your doctor has prescribed oral minoxidil (low-dose tablets), take as directed — usually once daily with food. Your doctor will monitor your blood pressure.
Doseringsschema
First 2-6 weeks
Some patients experience a temporary increase in shedding. This is a positive sign that the treatment is stimulating hair follicles.
3-6 months
New hair growth becomes visible. Hair may appear thin or fuzzy at first.
6-12 months
Maximum visible results. Hair becomes thicker and more pigmented.
Bijwerkingen
Scalp irritation
Mild dryness, itching, or redness at the application site is common. Using the foam formulation instead of the solution can help.
Oral minoxidil side effects
Low-dose oral minoxidil may cause mild fluid retention, increased heart rate, or headache. Your doctor will monitor these. Report any chest pain, dizziness, or rapid heartbeat.
Unwanted hair growth
Some patients may notice fine hair growth on the face or hands. This is usually mild and reversible.

Bewaring
Store at room temperature below 25°C. Keep the cap tightly closed. Do not use if the solution has changed colour or has particles.
Wat te verwachten
Minoxidil is a vasodilator that increases blood flow to hair follicles, stimulating growth. It works best as a long-term treatment — stopping will cause hair loss to return within 3-6 months. Combination with finasteride (the gold standard) gives better results than either alone. Results vary by patient; consistency for 6-12 months is needed to evaluate effectiveness.
