CE QUE C'EST
Thyroid dysfunction covers two main conditions: hypothyroidism, where the thyroid gland produces fewer hormones than the body needs, and hyperthyroidism, where it produces too many. The thyroid regulates functions such as metabolism, heart rate and body temperature.
Hypothyroidism presents with fatigue, weight gain, cold intolerance and dry skin, while hyperthyroidism presents with weight loss, rapid heartbeat, nervousness and heat intolerance.
Both conditions require diagnosis through blood tests and endocrinology follow-up. Treatment is adjusted according to the type and cause of the dysfunction.
À QUELLE FRÉQUENCE
Hypothyroidism affects approximately 3–5 % of the European population, with higher prevalence in women and people over 60.
European Thyroid Association (ETA)
CAUSES
- Autoimmune disease (Hashimoto's thyroiditis for hypothyroidism; Graves' disease for hyperthyroidism)
- Iodine deficiency or excess in the diet
- Surgical removal of the thyroid or radioactive iodine treatment
- Side effect of certain medications
- Thyroid nodules producing excess hormone
- Postpartum or infectious thyroiditis
APPROCHES THÉRAPEUTIQUES
- Hypothyroidism: levothyroxine (synthetic T4) at a dose adjusted by the doctor based on blood tests
- Hyperthyroidism: antithyroid drugs (thiamazole, propylthiouracil) under endocrinology supervision
- Beta-blockers to control symptoms such as rapid heart rate or tremor
- Radioactive iodine or surgery in selected cases of hyperthyroidism
- Regular monitoring with TSH, free T3 and free T4 blood tests
- Dose adjustment during life stages such as pregnancy or ageing
QUAND CONSULTER UN MÉDECIN
See a doctor if you experience persistent fatigue, unexplained weight changes, cold or heat intolerance, palpitations or changes in heart rate. A blood test can assess thyroid function.
