O QUE É
Insomnia is a sleep disorder characterised by difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep or waking too early without being able to return to sleep, with negative consequences during the day.
When it occurs at least three nights per week for over three months, it is considered chronic insomnia. It can be primary or secondary to other conditions such as anxiety, depression, chronic pain or certain medications.
A medical approach begins with a detailed clinical history that rules out organic or psychiatric causes and assesses sleep habits, schedules and environmental factors.
QUÃO COMUM É
Chronic insomnia is estimated to affect around 6 % of the adult population in Europe; insomnia symptoms are far more common, affecting up to a third of adults at some point.
