O QUE É
Chronic pain is pain that persists beyond three months, or beyond the expected healing time of an injury. Unlike acute pain, which serves as a warning signal, chronic pain can itself become a disease.
It may originate from an initial injury (such as surgery or trauma) or from an ongoing medical condition (such as osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia or neuropathy), but in many cases the exact cause is not fully identified.
The management of chronic pain usually requires a multidisciplinary approach combining pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments, tailored to each person and periodically reviewed by a medical team.
QUÃO COMUM É
Chronic pain is estimated to affect approximately 20 % of the European adult population, with higher prevalence in women and people over 65.
